Dauphin Island (English Dauphin Island; 1699-1763: French L'île du Dauphin; formerly French L'île du Massacre) is a large island spit in southern Alabama. It is the largest island in the state, covering an area of about 16.1 km². Administratively it is part of the Mobile District. Numerous oil rigs are located in the waters of the island's bays.
