Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan is a country on the border of Europe and Asia. It is often attributed only to Asia, but sometimes it also refers to Asia and Europe. Azerbaijan is about the same size as Austria, and it has slightly more inhabitants. The capital Baku, located in the east, right on the shore of the Caspian Sea, is the largest city. Almost every fourth resident of the country lives here.

Azerbaijan is a republic with a parliament. The head of state is the president, who has especially great power. But the political situation is problematic: part of the country is occupied by the army of neighboring Armenia, and the other part wants to become its own independent state. This part is called Nagorno-Karabakh. But it is not recognized by any other state on Earth. Another part of the country, called Nakhichevan, is completely separate. You need to go there through another country or get on a plane.

Earlier, part of the Silk Road passed through Azerbaijan. It was a particularly long trade route with a length of almost 6,000 kilometers. Long-distance merchants used this route to transport goods from Asia to Europe and vice versa.
