Live cameras: Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is an island country in the Caribbean. Christopher Columbus landed on the island during his first voyage and named it Hispaniola. In translation:  "Little Spain".

The Dominican Republic shares the island with the State of Haiti. Spanish is spoken in the Dominican Republic, and French is spoken in Haiti. The Dominican Republic is about the size of Switzerland, but there are slightly more residents living here. It is sometimes confused with the island State of Dominica, which is also located in the Caribbean. The name comes from Saint Dominic.

The Dominican Republic is one of the most popular destinations on Earth. Even in winter, the temperature at night barely drops below 20 degrees Celsius. The water temperature ranges from 26 to 28 degrees throughout the year. There are no seasons like ours.

The capital is Santo Domingo. The old Town still looks like a Spanish colonial city. Founded around 1500, it is the oldest city in America built by Europeans.
