Saint Kitts and Nevis is an island State in the Caribbean. The state is one of the twelve smallest states on Earth. It is about the same size as the canton of Geneva, and smaller than the smallest German state. The main population comes from African slaves.
The two islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis were discovered by Christopher Columbus during his second voyage. The name of Keats Island goes back to the name of Christophe. The island of Nevis got its name from the Spanish word for snow, because the cloud cap of the highest mountain of Columbus resembled snow.
Centuries later, the islands became a British colony. That's why English is the official language, and the British Queen is the official head of state.
The islands have a hot tropical climate. There is a lot of rain during the rainy season, and cyclones are frequent. Until 1970, the cultivation of sugar cane was very important.
The country earns the most money today from tourism. Most visitors come from the USA. There is also industry. First of all, textiles and shoes are made. Farmers mainly grow rice, bananas and vegetables. Fishing also plays a very important role.
