New York State is located in the Northeastern United States and belongs to the Mid-Atlantic States of the United States. Most of New York State is occupied by relatively gentle mountain peaks (New England Mountains, Taconic, Catskill, Adirondack), plateaus (Allegheny, Hudson Highlands) and river valleys of the Appalachian mountains. In the west of the state, along the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River, there are practically flat lowlands; it is here that the famous Niagara Falls is located on the river connecting Lake Erie and Ontario. In 1664, the British captured New Amsterdam, the city and the colony were renamed New York ("New York"). The future state (and city) received its name in honor of the new owner - the younger brother of King Charles II of England, Duke of York.
In the 18th century, New York was at the center of the conflict between the English and French colonies in North America, known as the "French and Indian Wars." During the years of the struggle for US independence, New Yorkers actively participated in the patriotic movement; several major battles took place in the province. In the 19th century, the state of New York developed rapidly, a significant role in the growth of its economy was played by the opening in 1825 of the "Erie Canal", which connected the Great Lakes "> Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean.
