Most of New York State is occupied by relatively gentle mountain peaks (New England Mountains, Taconic, Catskill, Adirondack), plateaus (Allegheny, Hudson Highlands) and river valleys of the Appalachian mountains. In the west of the state, along the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River, there are practically flat lowlands; it is here that the famous Niagara Falls is located on the river connecting Lake Erie and Ontario. Long Island, located in the southeast of the state, is part of the Atlantic Lowlands.

The state of New York is characterized by a humid continental climate. In the east, on the ocean coast, there are usually cool, wet winters and hot summers, in the interior of the state it is somewhat colder. The Great Lakes, from which blizzards and snowstorms often come in winter, have a great influence on the climate of the western districts of the state.

The first European explorer to see the coast of New York was in 1524 the Italian Giovanni da Verrazano. In 1609, the north of the state was explored by the Frenchman Samuel de Champlain; and up the river, later named after him, the English captain Henry Hudson climbed. During the years of the struggle for US independence, New Yorkers actively participated in the patriotic movement; several major battles took place in the province. In the 19th century, the state of New York developed rapidly, a significant role in the growth of its economy was played by the opening in 1825 of the "Erie Canal", which connected the Great Lakes "> Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. It was then that New York received its famous nickname -" The Empire State ".
