Name
Yokohama (横 浜) literally means "horizontal beach". The current area, surrounded by Maita Park, the Zoka River and the Nakamura River, was a bay separated by a sandbank from the open sea. This sandbank was the fishing village of Yokohama. Since the strip of sand protruded perpendicularly from the ground, or horizontally when viewed from the sea, it was called a "horizontal beach".
Geographical position
Yokohama is located on the western shore of Tokyo Bay, 30 kilometers southwest of Tokyo, with which it is connected by railways, highways, and the streets of Kawasaki.
