The ancient capital of Japan is Kyoto. Tokyo is relatively young. It is located in the southeastern part of Honshu Island on the shores of Tokyo Bay. In the 12th century, there was a small fishing village here.

In the middle of the 15th century, the feudal lord Ota Dokanu built an Edo fortress on the site where the imperial palace stands today. In 1598, the shogun (military ruler) Ieyasu Tokugawa turned Edo into the main city. In 1868, Emperor Meiji officially declared Edo the capital of the Empire of the Rising Sun. Kyoto, where the emperors deprived of power lived, was called the western capital. Tokyo is eastern. Earthquakes and fires inflicted terrible destruction on the city, but it was rebuilt again.
