Tokyo is located along the shores of the Tokyo Gulf of the Pacific Ocean on the Kanto Plain of Honshu Island, the largest island in the Japanese islands. Tokyo is located in the southeastern part of the Kanto region, bordering in the east with Chiba Prefecture and the Edogawa River, in the west with Yamanashi Prefecture, in the south with Kanagawa Prefecture and the Tamagawa River. The islands of Izu and Ogasawara are also part of Tokyo1. Tokyo Metropolitan Prefecture (東京 都 jap., Tokyo-to) was created on July 1, 1943 as a result of the merger of the former Tokyo prefecture (Tokyo-fu, 東京 府 jap., Tokyo-fu) and the city of Tokyo (Tokyo-shi, 東京 市 jap., Tōkyō-shi), which was part of the Tokyo prefecture of Tokyo-fu since May 1, 1889. Special districts are now located within the historical boundaries of the former city of Tokyo.
