Tokyo Metropolitan Prefecture (東京 都 jap., Tokyo-to) was created on July 1, 1943 as a result of the merger of the former Tokyo prefecture (Tokyo-fu, 東京 府 jap., Tokyo-fu) and the city of Tokyo (Tokyo-shi, 東京 市 jap., Tōkyō-shi), which was part of the Tokyo prefecture of Tokyo-fu since May 1, 1889. Special districts are now located within the historical boundaries of the former city of Tokyo.
