Known since the 6th century. BC e. as the Greek colony of Odessa. In the source of the XII century. first mentioned as Varna; name by r. Varna. Of the several proposed etymologies, the one most convincingly associated with the name "var" - "mineral spring".
The city is the third most populous in Bulgaria, a major cultural and financial center, as well as an important transport hub for the country. Varna is the largest port in Bulgaria, there are ferry connections with the Black Sea, Port Kavkaz, Poti, Batumi and Istanbul. The population, according to official sources, has 369 632 inhabitants, together with the subordinate villages - 378 559 inhabitants (current count of 2020).
