History
The province of Florence is the heir to the prefecture of the Duchy of Tuscany, first formed in 1848. After the unification of Italy in 1860, the Florentine region was created (which turned out to be larger than the size of the prefecture of the duchy). In 1865, on the basis of Law No. 2248 (of March 20, 1865), provinces were created in the country, including Florence, and communes (municipalities) with elected councils (chaired by the royal prefect).
With the establishment of the fascist regime in 1922, the councils were replaced by special commissions, and from 1928 power in the provinces passed to the director and rectors (4-8 people) appointed by the Minister of the Interior. This procedure was in effect until the fall of the regime on August 11, 1944. During the years of fascism, the province underwent repeated territorial changes.
Finally, in 1992, the communes of Prato, Cantagalla, Carmignano, Montemurlo, Poggio a Caiano, Wayano and Vernio were separated from the province, from which the province of Prato was formed.
