The city was founded in the 18th century by the settlers of the Hakka people. They planted peach trees in the vicinity and named the area "Tao-ah-yuan", which means "peach garden". Then this name was transformed into "Taoyuan", and under this name the city is mentioned in the documents of the Qing dynasty in 1888.
